Centres of Renewal in Gemer

The Gemer region is located in the south of Slovakia. Despite the current economic downturn (high poverty and unemployment rates), the region is rich in both its intangible heritage and its multicultural character. Since 2018, our organization Obnovme Gemer has implemented interventions in the field of restoration of local monuments and infrastructure in more than 20 municipalities in the region, with active training and involvement of local people from marginalized Roma communities.

The aim of the Centres of Renewal is to find out our good experiences and to identify two other centers that are involved in local initiatives in the Gemer region. The centers will create space for the restoration of the local heritage: they will focus on expanding already ongoing reconstruction activities, on training and acquiring work skills of other unemployed people from the marginalised Roma communities in the field of restoration of monuments. A tool rental and workshops will be set up for the public, which will be available free of charge to people living in the surrounding villages. These tools can be used by locals to repair small homes, individual or community projects.

Complementary activities will be the extension of activities to the out-of-school education system for children from local communities and practical education for the training of the local unemployed. The activities will include a school in the field of crafts and techniques that are of local heritage, thus bringing a unique renewal of the practice, which will bring our clients a significant position in the labor market. Community centers in the region are also partners in this activity.

Our centers will also be available for tourists. Our staff will be equipped with information materials about the sights of Gemer, in order to make the architectural gems of the region and the Gothic Way accessible to the general public.

The project LDI02024 Centres of Renewal in Gemer is co-financed by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 and the state budget of the Slovak Republic.

A complementary activity will be the extension of activities to the after-school education system for children from local communities and practical education for the preparation of the local unemployed. The activities will include training in crafts and techniques that are suitable for the restoration of local heritage, thus providing a unique work experience that will give our clients an excellent position in the labor market. Community centers in the region are also partners in this activity.
